Booting Linux via USB disksInstallation USB SUSE Linux (in german) Patches to the Linux kernel 2.4 series to enable booting from a usb device are provided by Eric Lammerts. And for Linux 2.4.26 you can use my patch: boot-usb.linux-2.4.26.patch. If you use a 2.6 kernel try the patch by David N. Welton or a patch from William Park which was posted on lkml. The patch by Daniel Drake for 2.5 kernels uses a kernel parameter which sets an arbitrary delay before mounting the root drive. An alternative way to boot your usb disks via an initial ramdisk.
